Report by Shari Dovale, September 30, 2015
WBCSD83 in Priest River, Idaho recently held a School Board meeting which was packed with concerned citizens, parents and grandparents. They were there to express their outrage at policy #3281 – Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation.
The Board Chairman started the meeting off with an immediate vote to reject this policy. She then discussed all the misinformation surrounding the vote.
She included the fact that the Board had met a week previously to discuss this policy, however, she neglected to mention that the first meeting was so lightly publicized that every one of the board trustees missed the short notice given.
Since this meeting, it has come to light that this school board has already approved a transgender policy for the athletics and activities departments. (This was approved via last years board.)
The policy, 11-3, required by the un-elected IHSAA (Idaho High School Activities Association) was also ‘lightly’ publicized and, therefore, unknown to the general public.
The community is on a justified crusade to keep these policies out of their district and away from their students. Alas, they do not realize how far the district will go to get these policies implemented.
This one single policy was voted down. What about all the other ways to implement? Athletics, activities, dress code, restrooms, etc.
They can see the single issue, but who is looking at the big picture?
